This tour is a popular choice amongst honeymooners and families with young children, as all three destinations are in malaria-free areas, offering family-friendly accommodation, activities, and sightseeing, even in the Cape Winelands. Madikwe Game Reserve is one of Southern Africa’s premium “Big 5” safari destinations, with no need for malarial prophylactics. Most lodges in the Madikwe Game Reserve welcome children of all ages and offer specially designed child-friendly programmes to keep the little ones busy, ensuring that they enjoy their safari experience. This tour can also easily be converted into a culinary tour, focusing on food and wine experiences, as both Cape Town and Stellenbosch are considered South Africa’s culinary capitals.

La Cotte Farm is uniquely positioned just a stone’s throw away from the charming village of Franschhoek. It offers the perfect blend of proximity to the vibrant main street and the tranquility, privacy, and rural charm of a working wine farm. Dating back to 1698, La Cotte Farm was among the first of the eleven Huguenot Farms granted to French immigrants who sought refuge during the 17th century. As the only farm within walking distance from anywhere in the village, it’s an ideal destination for those staying in the area, offering the opportunity for a leisurely stroll before indulging in the delectable cuisine available. La Cotte invites guests to explore their picturesque gardens, with majestic views, and to immerse yourself in the essence of this hidden gem nestled in Franschhoek’s crown.
Nestled among the rocky dolomite ridge of the Madikwe Game Reserve, The Royal Madikwe offers guests the perfect retreat to rejuvenate their minds, release life’s pressures, and immerse themselves in the magnificent beauty that surrounds them. Endless views, adorned with volcanic intrusions known as inselbergs, transition into grasslands, rocky outcrops, and ancient Leadwood trees, where the Kalahari Thornveldt meets the Bushveldt Complex. Travellers choose The Royal Madikwe for its unforgettable experience, seamless luxury, sincere and passionate team, and, of course, the consistent abundance of wildlife encounters both on safari and right at the lodge’s doorstep, featuring a private watering hole around which the lodge is enveloped.
Useful things to know before you embark on this amazing journey
All year round is suitable for this tour. December to March is referred to as the “Green Season” in Madikwe. Despite the occasional scattered thunder shower, it is a beautiful time to visit, with the main birding season in full swing, along with sightings of many baby animals. Cape Town’s main rainy season, on the other hand, is opposite to Madikwe’s, with June to August typically being the wettest and coldest period. However, each season has its own charm, and there are no months that we would recommend absolutely avoiding.
All locations on this tour are malaria-free.
Madikwe is a 75,000-hectare reserve located in a transition zone between the Lowveld bushveld and the Kalahari Thornveld, where several rare species from both ecosystems naturally occur. In fact, Madikwe is one of the few reserves in Southern Africa where the desert-adapted Kalahari Gemsbok and Springbok share territory, and rare species such as the Brown Hyena and the Aardwolf can be found. You will be able to see all the Big 5 but also other species which are not usually found in the bushveld areas such as the Greater Kruger National Park, making for exceptional wildlife encounters.
With the exception of Kosher or Halal requirements, most properties can accommodate all dietary preferences. It is recommended to provide advance notice.
